Lesley
James: We are live in the CD101 Big Room with the Kooks.
The Kooks: Hello
LJ: Yes, hello. We have Max. We have Luke. We have Hugh, and we have
Paul. Guys, welcome. Thank you so much for coming in this afternoon.
The Kooks: That’s cool. Thanks for remembering all of our names.
LJ: You know, I’ve been studying and studying and studying and studyi-
No, easy names to remember.
K: That’s true.
LJ: And good looking guys as well.
K: Oh, thank you.
LJ: Playing a sold out show tonight at the Basement. Will you just jump
right into a song? I know we’d love to hear one.
K: Yeah sure. An old one first.
Kooks Play "Ooh La"
LJ: The Kooks. Live in the CD101 Big Room. First things first. I got to
ask, nobody has food poisoning right? Everybody’s healthy? Everyone’s
good? Ok. There was a show here last week and some bands got sick. Blah,
blah, blah. And we just want to make sure you guys are on for tonight,
right?
LJ: Awesome.
K: Are you coming?
LJ: Oh, I’m coming.
K: Wicked.
LJ: Yeah, it’ll be a good time. The album Inside In/Inside Out.
Congratulations on that, on Astralwerks Records. Last couple of months, I mean,
this has got to be exciting for you guys. The US tour has been sold out
including tonight’s show at The Basement. I think that sold out in early March.
What’s these last couple months been like for you guys?
K: It’s been really cool. I mean, I think, you know, it took quite a long time
for us to get our record out in America. So, it’s really cool that now people
are kind of getting into it. It’s good. I mean, you know, it’s not anything bad
is it?
LJ: No
K: It’s been really fun. We’ve had a great time. You know, it’s been a, just
kind of, we just kind of want to tour as much as possible. I mean, but we also
want to do a second album. So you know, there’s a lot of places to go to in
America.
LJ: Yeah. Any highlights for you so far?
K: Coachella was amazing
LJ: I believe it.
K: The music Coachella Festival that was incredible.
LJ:
Awesome, and you’re playing Letterman what, this week?
K: Yeah
LJ: Awesome
K: That’s nice, isn’t it?
LJ: Yeah
K: Letterman’s like, the coolest thing ever. Everyone knows Letterman.
So it’s going to be quite weird.
LJ: Very Cool
K: Good day, you know.
LJ: Well, congratulations. You guys deserve the best. You ready to get
into another song?
K: Yeah,
sure. I think. This is our new single.
LJ: OK. Kooks, live in the CD101 Big Room. Kooks Play "She Moves In Her Own Way"
LJ: Live in CD101 Big
Room with the Kooks. Yes, that was awesome. The album “Inside In/ Inside Out”
available now. And I got to tell you guys, we have this thing called guest DJ
where a listener, just like one of these fine folks here, will come in and be
the DJ for the hour on air. Ok, with me. And I got to tell you at least half the
play lists I get, have a Kooks song on it.
K: That’s amazing.
LJ: Yeah, so CD101 listeners love you guys.
K: That’s amazing.
LJ: Alright.
K: Thanks for telling us.
LJ: I had to tell you. I think that was important, you know. About the record
now, I was wondering what was going through your guys’ heads when you were
writing and recording this new album?
K: Well, I
mean, to be honest, I think we, after having done quite a lot of damage,
we just wanted to do something quite just like four guys in a room,
quite raw and not think about it too hard. Kind of let the songs write
themselves in a way, you know what I mean? So we didn’t really, I don’t
think we really had one thing in mind, did we? We didn’t like go into
studio and go we want it to sound like this, that, and the other. We
just went in and were just like, you know get great sounds and have fun,
you know?
LJ: And you
all write? Did I read that somewhere? You guys all write songs?
K: Yeah
LJ: Now, is that tough sometimes? You know it’s like, oh, you can only
fit so many songs on an album. Max, we’re not taking yours this time,
sorry buddy. You know? Do you ever have any problems, issues?
K: We’re only one record in. We’ll have to see on the next one, won’t
we?
LJ: True, true, OK well thank you. Ready for another song?
K: Yeah, we wanted to play a new one, if that’s cool?
LJ: Cool, we would love it.
K: We’ve only played this one a few times. I think this will be on our
second record.
LJ: Live in the Big Room with the Kooks.
LJ: That was wonderful.
Tonight’s show is sold out at The Basement. We are here with the Kooks. Now that
was a new song you said. Are you going to be playing new music tonight?
K: Yeah, we are. Yeah.
LJ: A
couple new ones?
K: Well, you know, it’s weird because like I was saying it took us so
long to get our record out here that now we’re playing an album that we
did two years ago. So, yeah we’re definitely playing some new stuff.
LJ: Very
cool and just one more quick question for you, I thought this was kind
of cute, what would you be doing if you guys weren’t Kooks. Max, do you
want to start? What would you be doing if you weren’t a Kook, if you
weren’t in this band?
K: Just playing music still.
LJ: Playing music still?
K: Yeah
LJ: Very cool, hey! Luke?
K: Yeah, just playing music.
LJ: Yeah, is that what everybody is going to say here?
K: In my bedroom, yeah.
LJ: Hugh, anything different? No?
K: Yeah, to be honest, I think we all kind of like… yeah, or maybe
drinking martinis.
LJ: Ah, there you go.
K: On a beach in Hawaii somewhere. Writing poetry.
LJ: Now there’s not a bad idea. Well hey guys we really appreciate you
coming in this afternoon. Will you play us one more?
K: Yeah we’re going to play “Naïve.”
LJ: Alright, yes. Let’s hear it for the Kooks. Kooks Play "Naive"K: Thanks for coming
down everyone. Very cool, very cool, very cool.
LJ: Woo, yes, thank you so much for coming in Max, Luke, Hugh, Paul. The Kooks,
ladies and gentlemen. Yes, playing tonight a sold out show at The Basement. Make
sure you pick up their new album Inside In/Inside Out available now on
Astralwerks. Let’s hear it one more time. And we turn it back over to command
central.
