Andyman: We are live in the CD101 Big
Room. We are here with Gomez. Playing the show tonight at the Newport Music
Hall, Matt Pond also on the right?
Gomez: That’s Right
A: And looking forward to and thanks for coming by CD101.
G: Thanks for having us.
A: You’re welcome here anytime; we’re excited about the show. The record, How We
Operate, out and available. . . people should go buy it, right?
G: Yeah, they should definitely go and buy it.
A: Yes, that what I… I thought you’d agree with that. How long have you been on
this tour?
G: Forever I think, since the dawn of time.
A: Since the dawn of time
G: Yeah, we were there with the ferns and the primeval ooze and that was Gomez
doing a little gig there.
A: I know that I was down in Tennessee in June with you at Bonnaroo, and you
where down there, have you been back to England since June?
G: I’ve
briefly been there; I popped in for a couple of days.
A: Yeah
G: Yeah, I got married, I managed to get married in the British Isles
A: Oh, how nice, congratulations.
G: I’ve only been in the room with her for about three hours since I
married her though.
A: OK, touring works out great like that.
G: Yeah it does, it tends to.
A: That’s the kind of thing that’ll keep a marriage together, brother.
You remember that. There playing at the Newport Music Hall tonight.
Let’s give them a hand. Let’s have a song. What do you think? Gomez here
in the CD101 Big Room.
(Gomez Plays See The World)
A: Gomez here in the CD101 Big Room.
Excellent job guys. The show tonight at the Newport Music Hall, there are still
tickets available for the show. We got Ian, Ben and Tom here.
G: That’s right
A: Once again thanks for being here. Tom you and I were speaking before the
performance that there is a rarities record, A-sides, B-sides, rarities, what
sort of retrospective ‘98 to 2004 that is coming out next week.
G: Yeah, that’s right, yeah.
A: On Virgin records.
G: On EMI catalog, actually, yeah it was, we were on a little label for many
years called Hot Recordings in the UK. It was a great label, it had the Verve on
it, and Placebo, and Manachery and David Gray. It was just this little label
that had all these great, interesting things on it. It suddenly ceased to exist
a couple of years ago and we parted ways with that whole scene, EMI closed it
down. We went and joined ATO records and made this new record How We Operate.
But we wanted to. . .there were a lot of tunes that were released during that
period that were never released in the United States. So this record has like
sixteen tracks that were never released in America and it has two brand new,
completely unreleased tracks anywhere on it as well. It’s kind of, it’s a great
release.
A: Yeah.
G: It’s very cool kind of and interesting thing for anyone whose into
the band.
A: You seemed excited when I first spoke to you about it.
G: Yeah.
A: You were “I’d been working on that.”
G: Yeah.
A: So congratulations on having it come out. I know that’s a great
feeling. You got a job done, and it’s coming to the public next week.
And I’m sure people can find out more, they can connect to your website
through CD101.com, and I’m sure your website will link to that as well.
G: Gomeztheband.com will you take right wherever you want.
A: That will be great. Terrific, well you ready to do another song?
G: Sure, yeah
A: Alright, Gomez here in the CD101 Big Room.
(Gomez Plays Hamoa Beach)
A: And how much fun is
that? Gomez here in the CD101 Big Room getting ready for the show tonight, Matt
Pond on the bill as well at the Newport Music Hall, tickets are still available
for that show. We were talking about the time you spent on the EMI label and
all that time coming only a few hops over to the U.S. and in the time you guys
have been doing that, I don’t know why this question came to mind, but I’m dying
to know, when you’re getting ready to come to the U.S., besides the shows,
besides the music, is there anything that you just love about the U.S that you
can’t, like you think of I’m going to get to, what would it be?
G: Meat.
A: Meat. Excellent
G: I really like Graceland.
A: Ben and I are going to go have steak later.
G: Hotdogs, I like the food.
A: Alright, you love the food. Tom?
G: I’m trying to think now, you put me on the spot here.
A: Well I just wondered.
G: Bourbon.
A: I like
that, and Ian?
G: I like Graceland, I want to live in Graceland. He lives in the
states though
A: Oh you live here.
G: Yeah, he liked it so much he came to the States. I’m on the furthest
western fringe of occupied Mexico.
A: Really, yikes, well there’s plenty of houses in Tennessee too. If
you like Graceland you could be close to that.
G: I think he actually wants to move into. No, I want to move into
Graceland itself, just the jungle room, I want to live everything in
there. I really like that place.
A: Is there anything you think of that’s just
ridiculous about the States?
G: Oh yeah, plenty of things.
A: Plenty of things.
G: You know everywhere’s ridiculous, if you spend long enough there.
A: Alright, well I don’t know if I should push that, but I’m dying to
know.
G: People are ridiculous, right
A: People are ridiculous, DJs in Columbus, ridiculous. Alright, it is
really terrific to have you guys here and I think you’re going to do a
couple more. Are you ready to do your next one?
G: Yeah
A: We got Gomez in the CD101 Big Room
(Gomez Plays How We Operate)
A: Gomez
here in the CD101 Big Room. At the risk of this being a ridiculous
question, and I’m curious coming from all three of you that if there had
to be one musician that had the biggest impact on you in your life, one
single musician. I know it’s tough, who’s the first that comes to mind?
G: Two come straight to mind. David Burn and Doctor
John.
A: David Burn and Doctor John. Ben?
G: Maria Simone and Jimmy Page. I’m just imagining them going out with
each other or something or hanging out in a bar, sorry it was just a
little thing.
A: And, Ian, are you still in the jungle room on this
one?
G: Yeah, probably Elvis and Dylan
A: Elvis and Dylan
G: Buddy Holly, gee wiz
A: I was just curious guys, thanks for telling me.
G: Oh no, not at all, man.
A: That’s great. The show is tonight at the Newport Music Hall, I think
they’re about ready to do one last one. Let’s give them a big hand for
being here. And once again Gomez in the CD101 Big Room
(Gomez Plays Girlshapedlovedrug)
A: Gomez in the CD101 Big Room. Let’s here it for Gomez. Pick up the
record How We Operate, don’t forget the record Five Men In a
Hut in record stores next week. It’s an A-B and rarities collection
from ’98 to 2004. And the show at the Newport tonight there’s still
tickets available.
G: That’s right
A: Excellent, Now I’m going to do something that might come off the
radio as a little weird, but my friend here, Bryan Stroud, whose part of
the CD101 staff, I just want you guys to know this guys been bringing
your music to us for a long time. I mean he’s a big fan and on behalf of
him and everybody here thanks for coming and playing the big room.
G: Why thank you very much.
A: Give them a hand for this again. Bryan’s going to leave us so I wanted to do
that, because we’re going to miss Bryan, he’s leaving us. Ian Ball, Ben Ottewell,
and Tom Gray, let’s here it for Gomez. And we’re done we turn it back over to
command central.
