Blue October in the CD101 Big Room - 9.24.03
Andyman: We are live in the CD101 Big Room. Hey, thanks to
Amp, Amp energy drink from Mountain Dew, for sponsoring the CD101 Big Room. And
lets hear it for today’s guest Blue October.
Blue October: Thank you very much.
A: We get to everybody to tell ya’ll who’s here. We got
Justin, Piper, CB, Jeremy, and Ryan. And they’ve made the trek up from Texas.
Huston, Texas is where you guys call home, right? We were just talking about
that a little bit on the air. It’s a fun town. How long’ve you been out on the
road right now?
BO: Um, for the last like three and a half years off and
on. We’re a touring band, so we stay constantly on the road. As much as we can
possibly be on the road.
A: I think that’s a great thing.
BO: Little delirium in there, but you just rope it and
ride, ya know.
A: You’re at the New Port… No, the Promo West Pavilion
tonight with Vertical Horizon. How long have you been out on this tour?
BO: Um, We were out with Vertical for about two weeks
before, so now we’re starting our next two-week run with those guys, up the East
coast. And, uh, really nice guys, really great musicians, really talented, so we
like hanging out with them.
A: Well super. I know tickets are still available, Promo
West Pavilion tonight. You wanna jump right into a song? Then we’ll ask some
questions and have some fun. Let’s hear it for Blue October in the CD101 Big
Room.
BO: This is a track off of “History for Sale,” it’s called
Inner Glow, so thank you very much.
Blue October starts “Inner Glow”
BO: Thank you.
A: Blue October in the CD 101 Big Room. Uh, the record that
is out, caller “History for Sale,” from Bruno Records, right…Breno records.
BO: Actually no, Universal.
A: Well, slash Universal and you had a Universal record out
in 2000 called ”Consent to Treatment.”
BO: Yeah.
A: Now, in what ways has the band grown or changed since
that record came out?
BO: Mostly sobered, in uh… in a better track now, in a
better place now, now writing better songs, and I’m more focused. Lot more
healthy, eating right, trying to stay healthy and active. You know, it’s like
that, going to sleep when you should be going to sleep, that kind of thing.
A: That’s gotta be rough on the road.
BO: Yeah, well, you know…
A: Do what you gotta do, I understand. Tonight at the Promo
West Pavilion with Vertical Horizon. I’ve got another question, but I’m gonna
hold off. And let you do another song, that way people get a feel for what they
might see tonight. At least an acoustic feel for this. I know that… Thank you
very much for coming in and doing acoustic.
BO: Thank you for having us.
A: Ryan, you’re a talented man, you’re all. You can’t see
it, but listen, the people in the audience can, mandolin in one hand, he’s got a
violin under his chin, and he’s playin in… you’re a talented man. That’s a good
job. Blue October in the CD101 Big Room.
BO: This is a song called “Ugly Side.”
Blue October starts playing “Ugly Side”
A: Excellent job. Blue October in the CD101 Big Room. I
have to say, that the question I’m gonna ask, with the first son I was like
“this is the perfect opportunity to ask,” then you gave me another perfect
opportunity. The emotion in the record, and the songs that you write, well, the
lyrics evoke such strong emotion, from where does that spring up?
BO: Different instances, different occasions, different
like, different things that happen that you come across and stumble upon.
Relationships that fall apart, relationships that blossom. People that you let
down, people that let you down. Kind of a way of getting things out, without
paying for a shrink. Health insurance is pretty expensive these days, so I just
turn it loose on all you guys. So thank you very much for being my shrinks for
the day.
A: When did you start writing songs?
BO: When I was like nine or ten.
A: I’m gonna guess that the might not have been so
emotional.
BO: Well actually, you should listen to a few of them. No,
my first song was about a kite, actually, getting stuck in a tree.
Sings “Kite Song”
A: That’s awesome! You were nine?
BO: Yeah, I had to sing it in my second grade class.
A: Man, it stinks when I meet people with that much talent.
BO: And then I got a distortion pedal, clicked it on, it
goes “rrrreeeeee.”
A: Hocking records on the radio and you’ve got that much
talent. It’s just not fair.
BO: A kite in the night, that’s talent?
A: What will the show be like tonight? What do you expect?
BO: A bipolar experience. It’ll be nice, we have some slow
stuff that we’re gonna play, we have some pretty hard stuff that we’re gonna
play. We’re up and down, it’s definitely an emotional thing, An emotional roller
coaster. So, if you’re into that kind of thing come on down.
A: You’re on this tour, playing places like Promo West,
with Vertical Horizon, are you enjoying this or would you prefer to be, I’m
gonna guess you’ve spent quite a bit of time in smaller clubs with people right
up against ya, which do you like?
BO: We like the small clubs, when nobody knows who we are
and we can get right in their face. But it’s nice to see a lot of people out
there, and its nice to see more than three faces to get after in the audience.
You try to get to the one in the fifteenth row, yawning back there, you get all
up in his face.
A: It’s always nice to share your music with new people,
too. The record is called “History for Sale,” it is out and available, think
you’re gonna do another song from that record?
BO: Yes.
A: Very good. Blue October in the CD101 Big Room.
BO: This was written as a birthday present actually, cause
I was broke, so here we go.
Blue October starts playing
A: Blue October in the CD101 Big Room. Thank you very much
for coming out.
BO: Thank you for having us.
A: You’re very
welcome, it’s always a pleasure to see bands play in here that just really love
playing. And you can tell that you guys really do. I’m sure the show will be
excellent tonight, with Vertical Horizon, at Promo West Pavilion, and once again
the name of the record is “History for Sale.” Let’s hear it for Blue October,
thank you very much once again for coming in and visiting us in the CD101 Big
Room. Thanks to Amp energy drink for sponsoring the big room, guys thanks a lot
come back next time you’re in town, you’re always welcome. Okay, lets head back
