Black Rebel Motorcycle Club - 2.10.06

Andyman: We are live in the CD101 big room. We are here with Black Rebel Motorcycle Club. Its nice to have you guys here, thank you very much for coming in.

Black Rebel Motorcycle Club: Thank you, thanks for having us man.

AM: Looking forward to the show tonight, heck of a lineup. With the Morning After Girls, Elefant, and then you guys. And I know you were just here back in September I believe it was, I got to catch that show, had a great time, looking forward to tonight. I thought maybe we’d jump right into a song to get the people excited about what their going to see on stage tonight. So lets here for Black Rebel Motorcycle Club at CD101.

Weight of the World

AM: Live in the CD101 big room with Black Rebel Motorcycle Club. Your CD came out in fall called “Howl” its on RCA records. You had awhile the record has been out, your going out on another tour of that record. How do you feel about it this many months after the fact? Has it changed for you emotionally? Do you see the songs in a different light?

BRMC: We are really proud of the record, we were actually when we did it it was… I guess we are proud of all of them but this one had something else to it cause we kind of dug ourselves out of a hole a bit with it, and it helped us get out of that hole in a lot of different ways. So it means a bit more in some strange way. But at the same time it was a bit of a fight you know cause its not really a sound that people are used to with us. So we had to do a little more work to keep it going and keep it alive. Touring it is kind of where our focus is right now, and to get it heard by as many people as we can cause its not something you hear on the radio too often. (laughs)

Am: Well we are happy to put it on the radio for you.

BRMC: If you know what I mean.

AM: By the way we are talking to the Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, Robert Levon Bean and Peter Hayes here, and…

BRMC: Hello hello.

Am: They are playing tonight at the Newport Music Hall. Elefant is on the bill as well as the Morning After Girls and I bet you have another song ready to go. Black Rebel Motorcycle Club in the CD101 big room.

The Line

AM: We are in the CD101 big room with Black Rebel Motorcycle Club. You reference the change in direction on this recent record “Howl.” What spurred that change in direction on?

BRMC: Its something we’ve had for a while. A bunch of the songs had been written since the first album. “Shuffle Your Feet,” “Complicated Situation,” “Still Suspicion…” was started, “Gospel Song.” They were songs that… excuse my sniffling please, I don’t know if you can hear it but during the whole song I don’t know, anyways. I’ve also got a fever of something very high.

AM: Well thank you for coming.

BRMC: But we’ve had the songs, we thought they were important songs. We thought they were stronger than B-sides. Americans don’t really get B-sides anyway so. We thought it would be that much more of a waste if we would have left it for England.

Am: Right. I think you did a great job.

BRMC: No offense to England.

AM: Well I think it is a terrific collection. When I first heard “Ain’t No Easy Way” I was just blown away. I love the harmonicas. I think it is a terrific song, and I was taken in by the rest of it. And when I saw you in September I recall thinking that everything sounds just so great, it’s just sonically its non-stop being hit by this emotion. I don’t know, I don’t wanna get too deep. Lets go with another song. There’s just no way for me to get out of that than to just to sound dumb, and everyone knows I’m pretty good at that. Black Rebel Motorcycle Club in the CD101 big room.

BRMC: We are going to gamble. Is this live on the radio? So gambling time here we go. If I cough and hack and ruin it sorry folks, here it goes.

Complicated Situation

AM: Live in the CD101 big room with Black Rebel Motorcycle Club. The record is in stores it’s called “Howl” its on RCA Records. Also the big show is tonight at the Newport Music Hall with Elefant and the Morning After Girls. So other than a cold, has this tour started out OK? No big problems?

BRMC: Its always a little strange, I don’t mean to complain, but for me personally its always a little strange coming back to the same place you as you played 6 months ago. Its kind of like time stopped, its really bizarre, I don’t know why. But that’s the great thing about it you know. Its kind of cool that we are getting to come back and there’s kind of more people than the last time. Its like if we fill the room halfway its kind of like getting to the point of selling out, and we are getting to the point of selling out. (laughter) I guess that what’s real paranoia is, but no I’m just fucking around. No but its cool, there is a different feeling this time out. When we did the September/October US tour it felt like people were finally coming out and listening and that was great feeling. Now that feeling is even growing more. I don’t know, I’m kind of tired of giving it away to Europe and the rest of the world. We kind of like to put our foot down, home country, and make something for ourselves. We are happy to do the work you know, its kind of a better feeling when you win the war first at home and then go abroad I guess.

AM: I gotcha. Well we are happy to help you with that. And I think you put out a terrific record. There are still tickets available for the show, so it’s a Friday night. You are going to have three excellent bands. I think you guys are ready to do another song for us.

BRMC: Yeah I’ll do a B-side since we were talking about B-sides. This is actually one that became a B-side and shouldn’t have. We actually had a lot of songs like that. We actually had like 6 or 7, or 8 or 9, or maybe10, that we didn’t add on the record and they were recorded for the record. And then what we did was, I think its going to come out in a week or so but its going to be an AP of some kind that’s just more of “Howl,” so it the directors cut. That’s basically what it is.(laughter)

AM: Lets hear it for Black Rebel Motorcycle Club.

BRMC: This song is called “Mercy” by the way.

Mercy

AM: Lets hear for Black Rebel Motorcycle Club one more time huh. (applause) Robert Peter, Peter I know you are feeling bad man. If you guys want to do one more that’s cool but I realize that you are not feeling the best man. I want to make sure. You know, we had a situation where Mike Ness came in he didn’t feel well. He played in the big room and then he didn’t play that night. I’m not saying that is going to happen, but boy did I catch a lot of crap for that. If you guys feel like doing one more that’s cool, I’m going to leave it totally up to you.
BRMC: I could sing “Rifles” I guess. We will do an old song, “Rifles,” just for nostalgia.

AM: Is that OK with you guys? (applause) It’s OK with us. I wanna say WWCD Grove City Columbus, cause I know its that time I have to say that. I’m sure now Leslie feels much more comfortable in the studio. Once again the record “Howl” is in stores and their playing tonight at the Newport Music Hall. There are tickets still available. Ladies and Gentlemen, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club.

Rifles

AM: That was great, thank you very much. Lets hear it for them one more time. Peter Hayes and Robert Levon Bean, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club. Tonight the show with Elefant and the Morning After Girls at the Newport, tickets still available. The record is “Howl” its in stores you should pick it up. Guys you are always welcome to come back here, and we would love to have you anytime. One more hand, and we turn it over to command center.
