Athlete - 02.15.06

Andyman: Yes we are live here in the CD101 Big Room! And we have a visit from none other than Athlete! Let’s hear it for them! Alright, normally, this is one of those special Big Rooms as Michael Palmero explained on the radio earlier today. I had an agent come out to your show last night and put some sugar in your gas tank so that you would stall out right here in Columbus and have to come by and play the Big Room. I think it was funnier when he said it. (laughter) Thanks. It was real nice of you guys to stop by and visit with us here. Not a show tonight, but you’re going to be playing here in Columbus in no time at all, it’s going to be Saturday, April 15th and you’re going to be playing at the LC, formerly Promowest Pavilion with Switchfoot. So, good job on getting on that tour, that’s gonna be big.

Athlete: Thank you very much.

Andyman: It’s nice to have you here, let’s give them a hand for stopping by. Let’s just kick this thing off with a song. You want to jump right into one for us?

Athlete: Absolutely. Yeah, yeah. Sorry. This is our first single, it’s called Halflight.

(Athlete plays Halflight)

Andyman: Oh yeah! Athlete here in the CD101 Big Room. Joel Pott there on guitar and vocals there and up front here in the room and it’s my right to left but you’re the audience right in front of them, we have Carey on bass, and Steven doing percussion through the wonders of MacIntosh. Tim back there on keyboards. Thank you guys for coming by and being here. Lesley, Lesley who was on the air just before us here, she said, “Andyman you have to ask them about what jobs they had before they decided to start the band.” So what jobs did you have before you started the band?

Athlete: Um, mine was kind of alright. I kind of got away with it I think, I was a manager in a skateboard/snowboard shop. Carey and Steve… Me and Steve used to job share one day a week, gardening. No gardening is glamorous, what we did, more digging holes and moving dirt and rocks. It’s kind of like, move that pile of sand from there to there. Now move that 17 ton of rock up that hill. That was my worst day.

Andyman: I’d keep calling it gardening, bro. That’s good stuff.

Athlete: OK, thanks. We’ll speak for Tim, Tim used to be an actury, which bacially means that he was very good with sums. If you get a few beers in him, just ask him any sum and within about 6 seconds he’ll give you the answer. There you go, he’s good like that.

Andyman: Wow. We’re going out for beers.

Athlete: It’s amusing to us.

Andyman: I’m taking some beer, we’re going out, I’m bringing a calculator and we’re gonna see what we can do.

Athlete: You will be amazed.

Andyman: Alright, Athlete here in the CD101 Big Room. You got another one for us? CD101.

Athlete: We’re gonna play you a song called Wise.

(Athlete plays Wise)

Andyman: A special afternoon visit from Athlete here in the CD101 Big Room. It’s really great to have you here. Now I almost forgot to mention that the record’s been out for a better part of the year, and it’s on Astrelworks, you should go pick it up. It is called Tourist and it is available at a fine record store near you, and probably online as well. If you connect to the band’s website, I don’t know if you knew this…

Athlete: It’s athlete.mu.

Andyman: I was gonna give them an easier way.

Athlete: MySpace?

Andyman: No, CD101.com, go to the playlist and click right to you there because we connect right through.

Athlete: Really? Hey hey! Why thank you! Yay!

Andyman: And then we get to say CD101.com. It’s a beautiful thing.

Athlete: Do it that way.

Andyman: Now, we stopped you here today, but where do you go, where were you and where are you headed?

Athlete: We’ve been kind of all over the place, really. We started off at the Sundance Film Festival, a week there working really hard, snowboarding. Uh, and then we’ve just been all down the west coast, um and where else? We’ve just been in Chicago and Milwaukee. Tomorrow Toronto. Just going around doing this kind of thing, really. But you know.

Andyman: How was Chicago?

Athlete: It’s cold.

Andyman: It is cold. But how was the show? Were you well-received, did you have a good time?

Athlete: Absolutely, yeah.

Andyman: Was it your first time in Chicago?

Athlete: No, we came over here and we toured, we toured with Snow Patrol last year and we played at the Vic, and then we came back and played at the Double Door. And so hopefully we’ll be going back to Chicago in the fall, but coming back here even sooner.

Andyman: Oh, we’d love to have you. Now what’s been your favorite part of, now this is probably 3 tours in the U.S. that you had? And what’s been something that stood out? What was the most fun?

Athlete: The best thing…

Andyman: What happened Monday night? Come on, this is the good stuff.

Athlete: I’ll tell you what, we discovered karaoke in the U.S. and that’s always good. Karaoke in Portland is always good. On Monday night we ended up at a restaurant that I can’t remember the name of. Can you remember? No Los something, Loscalera, an Italian restaurant, owned by a Mexican guy. We loved his tequila. We’d love you to join in. Basically, Dave over here decided to tell him that we were really famous in the U.K. which is kind of semi-true. And so he decided that he’d just come and sit with us and tell us jokes and every 5 minutes order another round of tequila. So yeah, I think Dave was kind of broken a little bit.

Andyman: Excellent. So uh, I’ll have to keep that in mind, I have a thing about tequila too. That should probably be a conversation off the air. Why don’t we go into a song? Athlete here in the CD101 Big Room.

(Athlete plays song)

Andyman: Excellent. Athlete here in the CD101 Big Room. Out touring the country. Drinking tequila. I like that. It’s nice of you guys to stop by and take some time with us here. I want to remind people that they are going to be with Switchfoot at the LC Pavilion on April 15th, a Saturday night. The tickets go on sale this coming Saturday at 10 a.m. Just to let you know. Also I think you’re going to stop by Magnolia tonight, at 6:00, Magnolia Thunderpussy. And I imagine you can pick up the record Tourist on Asteralworks, will be able to do that tonight. Thank you Dave for helping put all this together, thank you guys, it’s been terrific. Let’s give them a hand for that! And let’s see if we can do one more here, can we do one more?

Athlete: Absolutely, yeah yeah. We’ll leave you with a song called 24 Hours. We just have to check that Tim’s keyboard works first. It does.

(Athelte plays 24 Hours)

Andyman: Let’s hear it for them, Athlete, here in the CD101 Big Room, Joel, Carey, Tim, Steven thank you very much, pick up the record, it’s called Tourist, thank you guys for coming by, give them one more big hand.

Athlete: Thanks everyone, thanks!
